Blog Ideas Do Not Come from Sitting at a Desk
Recently, I realized something while writing my blog.
When I sit down at my desk and think, “Now then, what should I write about today?” I rarely come up with a decent idea.
I pull up a blank document on my computer and stare at it. The harder I try to think of something interesting to write, the less I can think of anything at all.
But things are different when I go for a walk.
As I walk down the street, something I happen to notice can suddenly give me an idea for a blog post.
Or a casual remark in a YouTube video I happen to be watching will catch my attention.
“Wait. Isn’t there something strange about that?”
Once I start thinking about it, the idea expands in one direction after another.
Interestingly, the pieces inspired this way flow much more naturally than anything I struggle to force out while sitting at my desk.
When you think about it, ideas for blog posts do not suddenly emerge from nothing.
You see, hear, or experience something, and it gives rise to a question or reaction of your own.
That becomes the starting point for the piece.
Apparently, some research suggests that walking enhances creativity. The mind works differently while walking than it does when concentrating on the task directly in front of us, making ideas more likely to arise.
That certainly matches my own experience.
In my case, however, I think what matters more than the walk itself is encountering something and spontaneously beginning to think about it.
In the past, if I saw a strange person on the street or heard an odd remark on television, I would think about it briefly and leave it at that.
Now it is different.
I think, “Ah, I could write about this on my blog.”
Before I knew it, ordinary life had turned into a search for blog material.
There is, however, a downside to this.
Even when I go for a walk, I find myself composing sentences in my head. When I watch YouTube and hear something interesting, I cannot help planning the structure of a blog post.
I take out my phone and dictate the idea for the post.
What was supposed to be a change of pace ends up turning into something like work.
Even so, it is far more enjoyable than sitting at my desk and suffering because nothing comes to mind.
These days, rather than sitting down at my desk in order to write a blog post, I feel as though I am taking ideas that came to me during walks or while watching videos and turning them into prose afterward.
Apparently, for me, a desk is not a place where ideas are born. It is a place where I write up the thoughts that came to me during a walk.
Seen that way, going for a walk today in order to write my blog counts as a perfectly respectable creative activity.
To anyone watching, of course, I am just a middle-aged man wandering around aimlessly.
