“I’ve Run Out of Ideas”: Why a Railway YouTuber’s Confession Felt So Familiar
The other day, I watched a video in which a railway YouTuber lamented, “I’ve run out of ideas.”
Apparently, after running a channel for many years, every new idea is followed by the realization, “Wait, I’ve done that before.”
Railways do not undergo dramatic changes every day in the first place. There is news about new trains and timetable revisions, but if all he does is report it, viewers tell him they could simply read a news website instead.
That is a tough situation.
He became a railway YouTuber because he knew a great deal about trains. But after covering railway topics over and over, he eventually ran out of things to say.
I Hit the Same Wall with My Blog
The truth is, I understand exactly how he feels.
There was a time when I mainly wrote blog posts about AI and IT.
At first, I had countless things I wanted to write about. New technologies, problems in software development, advances in AI—there was no shortage of material.
But after doing it for a while, I began to think:
“Wait, haven’t I written about this before?”
The IT industry changes rapidly, but the work I do does not change dramatically every day.
Even when I read new stories, I would ultimately arrive at one of my usual opinions.
It was as if I were changing only the titles and telling the same story repeatedly.
So I stopped limiting my subject matter to IT.
Politics, history, someone I saw on the train—anything was acceptable. I began casually writing about whatever caught my attention in daily life.
I originally started the blog to attract business, but now I am beginning not to care even about that.
Organizing the thoughts in my head and preserving them in writing has become the purpose in itself.
In short, it is a hobby.
Full-Time YouTubers Do Not Have That Luxury
But things are different for people who make a living from videos.
They cannot simply take the week off because they have no ideas.
If their views decline, so does their income. Their audience is always asking for something new.
But merely reporting the latest news is considered insufficient.
In other words, viewers do not want information about railways. They want entertaining content built around railways.
That is the difficult part.
Knowledge of trains may have been their advantage at first, but the longer they continue, the more they need entirely different abilities: developing ideas, speaking well, and having a compelling personality.
They may have started as railway experts, but before they know it, they are doing the work of a producer for a television variety show.
And they have to do it every week.
Just thinking about it is exhausting.
Information Is Finite, but Reactions Are Not
Ultimately, if you continue creating content within one specific genre, you will eventually run out of material.
That is because content is consumed faster than new facts are created.
To get past that wall, perhaps the audience has to become interested not in the information itself, but in the creator’s point of view.
Given the same news, what would this person think about it?
Given the same railway line, what would this person say after riding it?
That is where the value begins to shift.
Of course, this is not as easy as it sounds.
People who watched because the information was interesting will not necessarily come to like the person presenting it.
Have I Found a Way Never to Run Out of Ideas?
Fortunately, I do not make a living from my blog.
So if I have nothing to write about, I do not have to write. And if I write something similar to yesterday’s post, no one will complain.
In fact, lately I have enjoyed taking an ordinary event from daily life and expanding it into a story however I please.
Still, I do not know what will happen if I truly run out of material.
When that happens, perhaps I can write an article about why people run out of ideas.
…And just as I thought that, I realized something.
At this very moment, I am writing a blog post using someone else’s lack of ideas as my idea.
Apparently, as long as there are people struggling because they have run out of ideas, I should be fine for a little while longer.
