Were the “Dark Ages” Really Dark? Maybe They Only Look That Way in Hindsight
The Centuries History Classes Skim Over
When I think back to history classes at school, I remember certain long periods being treated surprisingly casually.
Two typical examples are the European Middle Ages and Japan’s Edo period.
The Middle Ages were presented as the “Dark Ages,” when the Church dominated society and science stood still.
The Edo period was presented as a backward era in which Japan isolated itself and fell behind the rest of the world.
Then came the Renaissance or the Meiji Restoration, and modernization suddenly took off.
But the more I think about this story, the stranger it seems.
Can a society really remain stagnant for centuries, wake up one morning, and suddenly race to the front of the world?
Real history is not that simple.
Without the Middle Ages, There Would Have Been No Renaissance
The idea that medieval Europe was simply a dark age has been substantially revised.
Universities emerged during the Middle Ages. Knowledge from ancient Greece made its way back into Western Europe, in part through the Islamic world, while scholarship accumulated in fields such as philosophy, logic, and medicine.
Agriculture and mechanical technology advanced as well.
In other words, neither the Renaissance nor the Scientific Revolution appeared out of nowhere.
They erupted from centuries of accumulated work during the medieval period.
The simplistic story that the Middle Ages were dark and everyone suddenly became intelligent during the Renaissance does not explain the rapid growth that followed. It makes that growth harder to explain.
Edo Japan Was Not Asleep for 250 Years
The same is true of the Edo period.
There is a simple and memorable version of the story: Japan closed itself off, fell behind the world, and then hurried to modernize when Commodore Perry’s Black Ships arrived.
But that alone cannot explain the extraordinary speed of Japan’s modernization after the Meiji Restoration.
During the Edo period, Japan had temple schools and domain schools. Publishing culture flourished, while commerce and logistics operated on a nationwide scale. Japan had not completely cut off contact with the outside world, either. Western knowledge continued to enter the country through fields such as rangaku, or Dutch studies.
The Meiji Restoration then brought Western institutions and technology into Japan at remarkable speed.
Japan was able to absorb them because the foundations were already there.
The Black Ships did not suddenly make the Japanese people intelligent.
A powerful engine was installed in a society that was already capable of running.
The Bigger the Change, the More Sudden It Looks
History tends to give names to dramatic events.
The Renaissance.
The Scientific Revolution.
The Industrial Revolution.
The Meiji Restoration.
As a result, it can seem as though the world changed at those exact moments.
In reality, each transformation was preceded by decades or centuries of quiet accumulation.
Even when a society appears stagnant on the surface, education may be spreading, knowledge accumulating, technology improving, and institutions changing little by little.
When the conditions are finally right, all of that emerges at once.
It is not always true that progress happened despite what came before.
Often, progress was possible because of what came before.
History contains more examples of this pattern than we might expect.
AI Followed the Same Pattern
For a more familiar example, consider AI.
Until quite recently, AI spent decades as one of the most prominent examples of a technology that never seemed to become truly useful.
An AI boom would arrive. Expectations would rise. The technology would fail to deliver as much as people hoped. Everyone would declare that AI had disappointed them again, and another AI winter would begin.
This cycle repeated several times.
Then ChatGPT arrived, and public perception changed almost overnight.
AI could write, recognize images, produce software, conduct research, and hold an ordinary conversation with a person.
It looked as though AI had advanced dramatically in just a few years.
Of course, none of it had suddenly been invented a few years earlier.
Researchers had been working on neural networks and machine learning for decades. Computing power kept increasing. The internet accumulated vast amounts of data. Important technologies such as the Transformer appeared.
Eventually, the necessary conditions came together.
A technology that people had long dismissed by asking, “When will this ever become useful?” was suddenly described as something that would transform society.
Look at What Happened Before the Breakthrough
From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
From Edo to Meiji.
From AI winters to generative AI.
These transformations differ completely in their scale and substance. Yet in hindsight, every major change can look as though it happened all at once.
That does not mean nothing was happening until the moment before it became visible.
Whenever the world seems to have changed overnight, it is worth looking at the period just before the breakthrough.
Usually, someone has spent decades doing quiet, unglamorous work where almost nobody was paying attention.
